A morning desert safari in Dubai is a guided desert adventure that takes you from your hotel in a 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser to the Lahbab Desert — also known as the Red Dunes — approximately 55 km southeast of Dubai city centre along the E66 highway. You spend around two hours in the desert doing dune bashing, sandboarding, and camel riding, then you are back at your hotel before noon.
The experience focuses entirely on adventure and natural scenery. There is no BBQ dinner, no belly dancing, and no evening camp entertainment — this is the pure desert experience at its best.
What makes the morning different from the evening? Two things: the light and the quiet. The Lahbab Red Dunes in the early morning look completely different to how they appear at any other time of day. The sun sits low on the horizon, casting long golden shadows across the undulating sand. The ripple patterns in the pristine, untouched dunes are perfectly visible before other tour groups arrive. The air is genuinely cool and fresh — nothing like the heat of the afternoon.
The driver deflates the Land Cruiser's tyre pressure to around 15 to 18 PSI before entering the dunes. This wider tyre surface area gives the vehicle grip on soft sand and cushions the ride across steep descents — a technique used by every experienced off-road desert driver in the UAE.
Here is exactly what happens from the moment we pick you up to the moment we drop you back.
| Time | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 7:00 – 8:00 AM | Pickup from your hotel in Dubai, Sharjah, or Ajman in a private, air-conditioned 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser |
| 8:00 – 9:00 AM | 45 to 55-minute scenic drive southeast via the E66 highway towards Lahbab |
| 9:00 – 9:15 AM | Arrival at the desert. Safety briefing from your guide. Tyre pressure deflated before entering the dunes |
| 9:15 – 10:00 AM | Dune bashing — 30 to 45 minutes of off-road driving across the Lahbab Red Dunes |
| 10:00 – 10:30 AM | Sandboarding — glide down the slip face of the red dunes |
| 10:30 – 10:45 AM | Camel ride — traditional 10 to 15-minute camel trek and photo stop |
| 10:45 – 11:15 AM | Open desert photo stops — golden morning light, panoramic landscape views, dune exploration |
| 11:15 – 11:30 AM | Refreshments — complimentary mineral water |
| 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM | Return drive to your hotel — back before noon |
The total experience, door to door, takes approximately 4 hours.
The desert behaves differently across the seasons, so pickup times adjust accordingly.
| Season | Months | Pickup Time | Morning Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter — Peak Season | October to March | 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM | 15°C – 25°C |
| Spring & Autumn | April–May, Sep–Oct | 7:00 AM – 7:30 AM | 25°C – 30°C |
| Summer | June to August | 6:30 AM – 7:00 AM | 35°C+ |
Dune bashing is the centrepiece of the morning desert safari. Your DTCM-licensed driver takes a 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser up, over, and down the 80 to 100-metre red dunes of Lahbab at speed — ascending steep faces, cresting the top, and descending the other side at angles that feel genuinely like a roller coaster.
The session lasts 30 to 45 minutes. During that time, the vehicle climbs and descends dozens of dunes, navigating the soft sand terrain with momentum and skill developed through years of desert driving experience.
The morning light makes dune bashing visually spectacular. The contrast between the shadowed and sunlit faces of each dune is at its sharpest in the early morning hours — and the dunes are completely untouched, with clean ripple patterns across every slope.
Seatbelts are mandatory throughout the dune bashing session. This is non-negotiable, and your guide will check before the first dune.
After dune bashing, the vehicle stops at the base of a suitable dune and your guide sets up the sandboards. Sandboarding — also called sand surfing or sand skiing — involves standing or lying face-down on a board and sliding down the steep slip face of a dune.
It is similar in principle to snowboarding, but softer, slower, and far more forgiving. No experience is needed. Your guide will demonstrate the stance and starting position, and you practise on a smaller dune before attempting the main slope.
The morning has a specific advantage for sandboarding: cooler sand is firmer and slightly faster than warm afternoon sand. The surface holds the board better, which makes the descent more controlled and the experience more enjoyable.
Children aged 6 and above can sandboard with adult supervision. Most guests do multiple runs — it tends to be the activity that generates the most laughter.
The camel ride is a shorter, quieter activity — typically 10 to 15 minutes — and it offers a completely different perspective on the desert. Sitting on the back of a camel, elevated above the ground, you see the dunes differently: wider, more open, more vast.
Camels have been the primary mode of transport across the Arabian Desert for thousands of years. Bedouin communities relied on them entirely — for carrying goods, crossing desert landscapes, and surviving journeys of hundreds of kilometres. Riding one, even briefly, connects you to that history in a way that feels real rather than theatrical.
The camels used on our morning safaris are calm, trained desert camels managed by experienced handlers. Children aged 3 and above can ride with adult supervision. The mount and dismount is the trickiest part — the camel kneels, you climb on, and it rises front legs first, which gives a sharp forward tilt. Hold on.
The morning desert safari happens during the best possible light of the entire day for photography.
In the first 60 minutes after sunrise, the sun sits low on the horizon and casts long, dramatic shadows across the undulating dunes. The iron-rich red sand absorbs and reflects this low-angle golden light at peak intensity. Every ripple pattern, every dune crest, every shadow line is sharp and defined. This is what photographers call the golden hour — and in the Lahbab Desert, it is extraordinary.
Some morning safari guests have the opportunity to experience falconry at the desert — one of the oldest and most culturally significant traditions in the UAE.
A trained falcon is brought out, its behaviour and hunting technique explained, and guests have the opportunity to hold the bird on a gloved hand and be photographed with it against the desert backdrop. It is a brief experience, but one of the most distinctively Emirati moments available on any desert tour.
The most common question we hear before bookings is: should I do the morning safari or the evening safari? The honest answer is it depends on what you want from the experience.
The main difference: morning safaris focus on adventure and natural scenery in cooler temperatures, while evening safaris add a BBQ dinner, belly dancing, Tanoura dance, and fire shows after the dune activities.

A sunrise desert safari starts at 4:30 to 5:30 AM — roughly two to three hours earlier than a standard morning safari. The standard morning desert safari starts at 7:00 to 8:00 AM and focuses on adventure — dune bashing, sandboarding, and camel riding.

The best time for a morning desert safari in Dubai is November to March, when morning temperatures sit between 15 and 25°C. Summer morning safaris, from June to August, operate from 6:30 AM to avoid the extreme afternoon heat.
Winter mornings in Dubai are genuinely beautiful. Temperatures at 7:00 AM range from 15 to 18°C in December and January — light jacket weather, with clear blue skies and low humidity. By 10:00 AM, it warms to a comfortable 22 to 25°C. Activities are easy in these conditions, and the photography light during winter golden hour is outstanding.
This is the busiest season for morning desert safaris. Availability fills up quickly, particularly on weekends and UAE public holidays. Book at least 24 to 48 hours in advance. Some dates during the peak December to January period require booking 4 to 5 days ahead.
Shoulder season mornings are comfortable — temperatures start around 25°C and warm steadily. By 10:30 AM it is noticeably hotter, but you will already be on your return drive by then. These months offer shorter booking lead times and occasional lower pricing compared to peak winter rates.
Summer morning safaris are entirely viable — but only because of the early pickup time. At 6:30 AM, Lahbab Desert temperatures are around 32 to 35°C, which is manageable. By 9:30 AM, before the full heat sets in, you are finishing activities and heading back.
The significant advantage in summer: you will often have the entire desert almost entirely to yourself. The Red Dunes are extraordinary in the soft summer morning light, with no other vehicle tracks in the sand, no crowds, and the full sense of being in a vast, open landscape with nobody else around.
Wear loose, breathable cotton or linen clothing with closed-toe shoes. Bring sunscreen at SPF 50 or above, sunglasses, and a light jacket for early winter pickups, when the Lahbab Desert temperature can drop to 15°C at 7:00 AM.
Yes. A morning desert safari is well-suited for most families. Its shorter 3 to 5-hour duration, cooler morning temperatures, and return before noon make it significantly more manageable for children than an evening safari.
