Red Dunes Desert Safari is a premium desert adventure experience located in Dubai's Lahbab Desert, approximately 50 kilometres southeast of the city centre. The tour features thrilling 4x4 dune bashing across dramatic crimson-coloured sand dunes, sandboarding, camel riding, and a traditional Bedouin camp experience with BBQ dinner and live entertainment.
The experience combines the most photogenic dune landscape in the Dubai region with an authentic Arabian Nights atmosphere — from the heart-pumping adrenaline of dune bashing across Lahbab's steep red slopes, to a peaceful sunset, a traditional camel ride, and an authentic BBQ dinner under the stars.
Not all desert safaris deliver the same experience. Here is why the Lahbab Red Dunes stand apart from the standard options available across Dubai.

| Sand Colour | Crimson red-orange | Golden yellow |
| Dune Height | Steeper, more dramatic | Moderate slopes |
| Dune Bashing Intensity | More thrilling, aggressive | Standard intensity |

The red sand gets its distinctive colour from iron-oxide minerals in the soil. When the sun sets, these dunes glow with a warm crimson light, creating photo opportunities you simply cannot find elsewhere in Dubai.

Dune bashing is the centrepiece of the Red Dunes safari. Your DTCM-licensed driver takes a 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser up, over, and down the 80 to 100-metre crimson dunes of Lahbab at speed — ascending steep faces, cresting the top, and descending the other side at angles that feel genuinely like a roller coaster.
The session lasts 30 to 45 minutes. The Lahbab dunes are significantly steeper and more dramatic than the standard Al Awir or Al Marmoom desert zones, which is precisely why this location delivers a more intense, more memorable dune bashing experience than the average Dubai desert safari.
After dune bashing, your guide sets up the sandboards on the steep slip face of a Lahbab dune. Sandboarding on red sand is a different experience to standard golden-sand locations — the iron-rich surface creates a faster, more vibrant descent. No experience is needed. Your guide will demonstrate the technique, and most guests complete multiple runs.
The camel ride is a shorter, quieter activity — typically 15 to 20 minutes — and it offers a completely different perspective on the desert. Sitting elevated above the ground on a trained desert camel, with the crimson dunes stretching in every direction, you connect with a form of desert travel that defined Arabian life for thousands of years.
The 30 to 45 minutes before sunset creates the most spectacular photography conditions in the Lahbab Desert. The low-angle light makes the iron-oxide sand glow intensely red-orange — a colour that is impossible to replicate at standard golden-sand desert locations. Position yourself on dune ridges for silhouette shots against the sky.
The Bedouin camp experience begins with a traditional welcome of Arabic coffee (gahwa) and dates. The camp offers henna painting, shisha, falcon photography, traditional Emirati dress photo opportunities, and a full evening of live entertainment: Tanoura dance, belly dance, and fire show. The BBQ buffet dinner features an international spread with full vegetarian options, and all meat is halal.
Real moments captured during our Red Dunes Desert Safaris across the stunning Lahbab crimson dunes — golden sunset light, towering red dunes, and unforgettable Arabian nights.

| Season | Months | Temperature | Experience Quality | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Ideal) | November–February | 15–25°C (59–77°F) | Perfect weather, stunning sunsets, comfortable evenings | Highly Recommended |
| Shoulder | March–April, October | 25–35°C (77–95°F) | Warm but comfortable, good value | Recommended |
| Summer | May–September | 35–48°C (95–118°F) | Very hot, evening tours are only viable option | Book Evening Only |
The best time for a Red Dunes Desert Safari is November to March. Winter evenings in Dubai see the Lahbab sunset at its most dramatic — a blood-orange sky over glowing crimson dunes, with comfortable temperatures that make the long camp evening genuinely enjoyable. Morning safaris are highly recommended during the summer months (May to September) when afternoon heat makes evening arrivals uncomfortable until sunset.
Guests in the above categories are still welcome at camp. They simply remain at the desert station during dune bashing and rejoin the group for all camp activities, dinner, and entertainment.
Every Red Dunes safari we run is personal, professionally driven, and planned around your group.
Book at least 2–3 days in advance during peak season (November to February). Popular sunset time slots can fill 4–5 days ahead during December–January holidays. Same-day bookings are sometimes possible during off-peak months (May–September) but are not guaranteed.
Most reputable operators offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. Cancellations within 24 hours, no-shows, and late arrivals typically receive no refund. Weather-related cancellations (sandstorms, extreme conditions) qualify for full refunds or rescheduling.
Dune bashing typically lasts 30–45 minutes of continuous driving, depending on the operator and desert conditions that day. Drivers adjust intensity based on guest comfort levels. The Lahbab Red Dunes provide a more intense experience than standard Dubai desert zones due to their greater height and steeper gradients.
Children aged 4–12 years can participate with signed parental consent. Children must wear seatbelts throughout. Children under 4 years are not permitted due to safety concerns. Consider our Morning Desert Safari for families with very young children, as the shorter duration and cooler temperatures are more manageable.
Yes. Inform your operator when booking. You can wait comfortably at the desert station (which has air-conditioned facilities, restrooms, and refreshments) while your group enjoys dune bashing, then rejoin them for the camp activities, dinner, and entertainment.
All camps offer vegetarian options as standard. For vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, or other specific dietary requirements, inform your operator at least 24 hours before your tour. Premium camps can prepare custom meals with advance notice. All meat served is halal.
Standard camps do not serve alcohol. Select premium and VIP camps operate licensed bars serving beer, wine, and spirits at additional cost. If alcohol availability is important to you, confirm this with your operator before booking and specifically request a licensed venue.
Yes, but with cultural modifications. During Ramadan, live entertainment (belly dancing, loud music) is suspended out of respect for the holy month. Camps operate with adjusted timing, and dinner (Iftar) is served after sunset. This creates a more peaceful, culturally-focused experience that many guests find meaningful.
Personal drones require registration and permits from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Flying unregistered drones is illegal in the UAE and carries significant fines. Most safari locations fall within restricted airspace near Dubai. Standard cameras and smartphones are welcome.
UAE Dirhams (AED) is the local currency. Most camps accept major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard). However, carrying AED 50–100 cash is recommended for tips, small purchases, and vendors who may prefer cash. ATMs are not available in the desert.
Lahbab (locally called "Big Red") features distinctive crimson-coloured sand due to high iron-oxide mineral content, creating dramatically photogenic landscapes. The dunes are steeper and more dramatic than Al Awir or Al Marmoom, providing more intense dune bashing. The area is also less commercialised with fewer crowds. See our full comparison of Dubai desert safari locations for more detail.
The Red Dunes Evening Safari (6–7 hours) includes a full Bedouin camp experience with BBQ dinner, live entertainment, and cultural activities after sunset. The Morning Desert Safari (3–5 hours) focuses on dune bashing, sandboarding, and camel riding in cool morning temperatures, returning guests to their hotel before noon — with no camp dinner or evening entertainment.
